Artist and activist Emma Campbell will host a talk followed by a participatory workshop on her abortion butterflies project An Appropriate Hobby.
An Appropriate Hobby encompasses the legacy of suffragette struggle with contemporary feminism, it links up new picture technologies via popular apps such as Instagram with Victorian categorisation and references the first ever colour photograph. It also overlays the issue of bodily autonomy, central to contemporary feminism, onto ideas about appropriate gendered sexual behaviour. Importantly, it also allows the abortion rights movement to take back the visual terrain.
For the workshop, we will all play with our own images to make and paste our own portraits.
This event is part of our exhibition At the Table which brings socially and politically engaged practices into our core gallery programming.
