To celebrate International Women's Day 2023 we are hosting a conversation with artists and women who participated in the project which explored body image after mastectomy.
Artist Mayte Ruiz Cala collaborated with the Knitted Knockers of Northern Ireland, a breast cancer support group, to enable women to create casts of their chests after a mastectomy. By recording the impact of cancer on their bodies in this way, the project enabled women to find courage, feel empowered, and build collective solidarity.
Photographer Emma Campbell created a photographic image of a confident woman proudly showing her mastectomy scars which was exhibited on billboards during Breast Cancer Awareness month in 2021. This powerful piece of public art was seen by thousands of people, giving hope and inspiration to countless women, and will now be presented alongside the casts as part of the exhibition.
To hear about the process and impact of this project join the participants, and Joanne Harris, the founder of Knitted Knockers Northern Ireland, alongside artists Mayte Ruiz Cala and Emma Campbell.
The exhibition runs 17 – 24 March in the MAC Common Room.
Knitted Knockers of Northern Ireland will host a social and creative space for those fighting breast cancer and breast cancer survivors on 24 March, 6.30pm - 8pm. No need to book, just come along on the night.
