For Balcioglu, experiment and transgression are necessary. She does not cultivate the image. Rather, she works on a flat surface using ink and other liquid materials, not stepping back while working, only seeing what is in front of her and never the entire picture plane as a composition.
Her working method is fast and physical, necessitated both because of the materials she uses and to halt cognitive control mechanisms. She describes her working process as "not entering into a visual regime of looking. I don't plan, but have ideas, visions and intuitions about what I'm going to do. I'm not allowing myself to see or discover things in the image, or to start connecting with art historiography which would pre-determine a prescribed trajectory or meaning."
