Niamh Seana Meehan: Sea Skin

Drawing from site visits to the islands of West Cork, the textures and colours of the piece reflect the diverse types of seaweed that embrace the coastal landscape.

The installation invites viewers to engage with the textile sculpture, as soft, airy fabrics gently brush against your skin, encouraging tactile exploration through hand-sewn strands.

As you relax into a reflective state, the accompanying audio landscape weaves a speculative narrative centred on wet survival in the ocean’s depths.

Immersing yourself in the sculpture, the work evokes a full body listening experience. Transcending conventional language through a dreamlike, eerie, and ethereal lull, enveloping the audience in an audio journey of immersed resonances and oceanic melodies. Soft murmurs from beneath the sea surface guide listeners to contemplate the unseen, invoking a sense of dreamy speculation.

The audio component collages field recordings, hydrophone captures, sound therapy instruments, and written dialogue, creating a multi-layered soundscape that enhances the installation’s immersive quality.
