Local Pupils Celebrate 5 Years of the MAC

Over the last 5 years, the MAC has established an enduring relationship with schools not only from Belfast but throughout Northern Ireland, with 25 pupils from Kilkenny making the journey North last year to view the work of the iconic artist David Hockey in an award-winning exhibition.

More than 10,000 primary school pupils from across Northern Ireland have benefited from ’Passport’, a MAC funded scheme which provides free transport to the venue.

Hundreds of pupils attended the MAC this week to enjoy excellent theatre and treats including Fane Street Primary School, Glenveagh Special School, St Gerards SEN, Glenwood Primary School, Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School - Park Lodge, Cliftonville Integrated PS, Euston Street Primary School & St Joseph’s School.

Anne McReynolds from The MAC welcomed the pupils who were joined by some of their elected representatives.

“We love the relationships we have with local schools and it is so important to us that we hear the voices of children in the MAC and that young people develop an early affinity with the arts and with venues like ours. We were determined that schools would play a significant role in our 5th birthday celebrations as they are among the relationships we value most. It has been an amazing 5 years and what a way to end the school year!”

The MAC is supported by National Lottery funding through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Noirin McKinney, Director of Arts Development, added: “In the last five years The MAC has been a wonderful home for the arts in the heart of Belfast showcasing exhibitions and events that have been a major attraction for locals, visitors and tourists alike. We are delighted with the outreach work the MAC has been engaged in with schools and children from Belfast and beyond, creating more opportunities for more young people, to access and participate in the arts, enriching their lives, stimulating their imaginations and encouraging creativity.”
