Taking a moment to understand: JAM Card training at the MAC
At the MAC, we want everyone who comes through our doors to feel welcome and at ease. That means thinking about accessibility in everyday ways and making sure our team feels confident offering the right support when it’s needed.
Earlier this month, staff took part in an accessibility training session as part of our wider commitment to inclusion. We were delighted to welcome Claire McCleery from the NOW Group, who spoke to the team about hidden disabilities and the JAM Card.
The JAM Card lets someone quietly ask for a little extra time or understanding. It might be a moment to process information, clearer instructions, or simply a bit of patience. These small things can make a big difference to how welcome someone feels in a busy public space.
Claire shared real experiences and practical advice that helped bring the conversation to life. The session was open, thoughtful and grounded in day to day situations our staff encounter at the MAC.
Alongside this session, we are taking part in the JAMuary Challenge, rolling out JAM Card e-learning across the organisation. We are doing this in phases, starting with operations managers and supervisors, followed by office staff, and then our casual team and volunteers.
Accessibility is not about getting everything perfect. It is about paying attention, being kind, and being willing to take a moment when someone needs it. We are proud to be learning together and to be working with the NOW Group to make the MAC a place where everyone feels they belong.
