Thursday, May 15, 2025 marks the 14th annual Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) – a global initiative focused on promoting digital inclusion and access for people with disabilities. At the MAC, we’re using this day to reflect, take action, and reaffirm our commitment to building a digital environment that works for everyone.

Accessibility is already at the heart of what we do. With 29% of our staff and volunteers identifying as having a disability or hidden disability, inclusivity isn’t just a goal — it’s embedded in our culture. But as we strive to serve all members of our community, we know that our online platforms must be as welcoming and accessible as our physical spaces.

That’s why, as part of our ongoing strategy, we’ve recently launched a new internal Accessibility Working Group. The group will develop a comprehensive action plan focused on improving accessibility, across all digital and physical touchpoints, with special emphasis on:

  • Website accessibility and user experience
  • Integration with the AccessAble app, giving visitors detailed information on how to navigate our building
  • Accessibility training for staff and volunteers
  • Ongoing audits and user feedback to guide improvements

“Our website and digital communications are often the first point of contact for many visitors,” said Rachel Leitch, Head of Marketing.

“It’s vital that what we present online is not only engaging but accessible to everyone — regardless of their abilities. Accessibility isn’t a one-time fix; it’s a commitment to continuous learning and improvement. We want to make sure everyone feels seen, supported, and welcomed at every digital touchpoint.”

In addition to digital improvements, The MAC continues to offer a wide range of access services for in-person visits, including signed and audio-described performances, captioning, relaxed shows, and step-free access across the venue.

Visitors with access needs can also join our Access Register, a simple way to tell us your requirements once and ensure a smoother booking process every time. Complimentary tickets are available for carers accompanying registered patrons.

This GAAD, we invite our community to learn more, reflect on digital inclusion, and join us in championing access for all.
