This illustrated talk will look at the broad history of flowers in art as well as the art of floristry. The presentation will focus on the Georgian era (1714-1830), which saw a massive rise in the variety and availability of flowers in Great Britain and Ireland.
The importance of which is exemplified by the astonishing numbers of species (985) depicted by Mary Delaney (1700-1788) in her ‘Paper mosaics’, some of which are displayed in I see his blood upon the rose, on loan from the British Museum. The presentation will also highlight the work of one of the most gifted and outstanding artists of the period Rachel Ruysch (1644-1750) whose work can also be seen in I see his blood upon the rose.
